CONNECTED TEACHING EDUCATOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Connected Teachers learn to work with tools, materials and methods and collaborate with Beam Center’s Professional Development Director Nancy Otero, and Domain Specialists who live in the intersection of idea and product. They sample Beam Center’s previous curricula and projects and brainstorm solutions that meet their own curricular objectives. They develop experiences for their students, explore scientific ideas, design, and engineering processes through the construction of their own projects, and collaborate with teachers in other domains to create multidisciplinary projects that integrate knowledge.

Supported by a grant from New York Community Trust's Hive Digital Media Learning Fund, during the 2015/2016 school year, Beam Center's Connected Teaching Fellows program will include 24 teachers from NYC public high and middle schools.

Session 1: Wednesday, October 14
6:30PM - 9:30PM

During this workshop we'll learn how to use the basic bits (lights, sound, switches, motors, sensors) as well as specific LittleBits kits such as the logic kits (boolean operations), hardware development kit (breadboard and circuits) and makey makey/arduino kits. Educators will be able to understand the way that Little Bits can be use inside their classroom and create drafts of possible lesson plans.

Session 3: Tuesday, November 11
6:30PM - 9:30PM

During this workshop teachers will create a lesson plan or an interactive object that be use in their classrooms. Examples: Heartbeat data display, speed measurement, music/light synchronize display, self- water plant, etc. Previous experience with the microcontroller that they are working with is needed, support and guidance will be provided.

EDUCATOR WORKSHOP EVENTS

The fall Beam Center will be offering two kinds of open events for Formal and Informal Education Professionals.

Educator Workshops: monthly free public workshops that will feature discussion, hands-on practice and invited speakers.

Educator Intensives: training in specific skills and pedagogy in series of two or three sessions. $50 tuition per session.

Intro to Robotics: Microcontrollers
50.00

Session 2: Wednesday, October 28
6:30PM - 9:30PM

Using the right microcontroller can be the difference between having an inclusive, self-starting and self-motivated experience from a frustrating one. During this workshop we'll explore four types of microcontrollers: raspberry Pi, arduino, gogo board and hummingbirds. We'll analyse their platforms, programming languages, documentation and community, and school implementations. Educators will be able to understand better the difference, potential and learning use of these microcontrollers. For better experience bring your own computer.
