Beam Center seeks proposals for ambitious collaborations between youth and Creative Big Thinkers

We believe all young people are capable of spectacular things. We’ve been proving it for 15 years in schools across NYC and at Beam Camp, where young people realize large-scale projects designed by world-class architects, artists and engineers. 

We’re looking for proposals for the 2020 NYC Beam Project, a collaborative public artwork project for display in Brooklyn. As the winning designer you and/or your team will work with the Project Team comprised of Beam Staff and Beam Youth to site and fabricate your big idea. Check out the 2019 NYC Beam Project and our Beam Camp projects for inspiration.

Project Proposals must be:

  • Compiled into one document

  • Submitted in .pdf or .doc/.docx format using the form below

  • Submitted no later than 11:59PM EST on Monday, January 3, 2020

The winning proposal for the 2020 Beam New York City Project will be:

  • Projects coming from creative individuals and teams, including but not limited to Artists, Designers, Architects, Builders, Engineers, Musicians, Fabricators & Technologists who have a connection with Brooklyn

  • Big ideas that culminate in a unique, ambitious, and spectacular artwork in a public space

  • Proposals that communicate a clear vision (sketches, diagrams, and other visuals are always helpful) and represent your/your team’s expertise

  • Projects that:

    • can be made by hand at Beam Center facilities in Brooklyn

    • utilize a range of materials and a range of fabrication processes

    • allow for collaboration with Beam Center youth and staff

    • allow for adaptability to a New York City public site and permitting requirements

Beam Center Disciplines and Facilities include:

  • Full wood and metal shops, equipped with a range of hand and power tools

  • Welding facilities

  • Textile, dye and sewing stations

  • Ceramic studio

  • Molding and casting facilities

  • Digital Fabrication (CNC routing, Laser-cutting, 3D printing, Vinyl Cutting)

  • Audio and Video editing / production

Project Proposals must include:

  • The title of your proposal, accompanied by a brief description of the project (3 sentences)

  • A detailed description of the project, along with applicable visuals (sketches, diagrams, renderings, etc. are encouraged)

  • Information about all the participants in your proposal: names, emails, experience (resume, CV, portfolio, etc.) and phone numbers of everyone involved

Your Proposal will not be evaluated based on:

  • Brooklyn / New York City as a theme in your project proposal

  • Designing a piece intended to be permanent 

Budget and Expectations:

  • Project Designers will receive a stipend of $5,000

  • Project Designers should have a general understanding of the processes, techniques and materials involved in their proposal

  • Project Designers must be available for weekly meetings January 30 through June 30 in order to facilitate any necessary development, prototyping and problem solving

  • Project Designers must be able to provide plans according to the project schedule


Friday, October 11, 2019: 2020 NYC Beam Project RFP opens

Friday, January 3 2020: RFP closes; all proposals must be submitted by 11:59pm EST

Wednesday, January 8 2020: Semi-finalists notified

Monday, January 13 2020: Project Designer selected
