A Community Approach to Art: Event Recap
Thank you to everyone who attended our July program “A Community Approach to Art: Supporting Communities by Engaging Artists + Youth.” A panel conversation, this program explored different approaches to community engagement in the arts and the importance of connecting practicing artists with young people.
We were joined by speakers from organizations across NYC, including Rodney Fuller, Interim-Executive Director Queens Council on the Arts; Lina M. Alfonso Gutierrez, Program Manager, Grants and Services at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC); Ye Qin Zhu, artist; Deborah Lendore, recent high school graduate and former Beam Camp camper; and Brian Cohen, Beam Center Executive Director.
This program was hosted as part of Beam’s Open Call process for our Big Projects. Each year, we search for proposals for unique, never-before-realized projects that will be built by young people at our summer camps and in a local NYC neighborhood. Big Projects at Beam allow young people to experience the creativity of artists, architects, and designers from around the world and to collaborate with them as the create something larger than themselves. Our Open Call for our 2023 season is still open - read more about the call and submit your proposals today!
