seeAsaw

Designed by Andre Kong & Ruben Correia

seeAsaw is an interactive and immersive structure of 6 seesaws, connected by a spectacular draping hammock made from rescued fishing nets, which moves in wave-like motions that are reminiscent of the sea. Designed by Andre Kong Studio in collaboration with Ruben Correia and Ghost Diving USA, seeAsaw will help raise awareness of the challenges posed by ocean pollution and to pave the way forward by reusing ‘ghost nets’ that pose threats to marine ecosystems.

Ghost Diving USA is a registered charity founded in 2012 and run by technical divers who have specialized in the removal of lost fishing gear and other marine debris since 2009. The USA Chapter is coordinated by Norbert Lee whose team will be supporting Beam Camp City, diving and collecting nets as well as sharing knowledge and raising awareness.

andre kong studio is an emerging, award-winning architecture and design studio based in London working on international projects across different typologies and scales.

Collaboration was the most enjoyable part about designing seeAsaw, and not just between us [Andre & Ruben] but also with Stephen, kind of figuring out how to overcome problems with other people whether it’s from an engineer perspective or from an architecture perspective or just kind of tapping into different peoples unique kind of special knowledge about some thing or experience and combining it to make some thing better than if you do it by yourself.

We didn’t realize how many people are making this possible and the fact that so many people are involved in this It’s it’s amazing. Everyone has ownership of what’s going on. It’s not just a project of a single person it’s a project of everyone. I think that’s something really amazing around seeAsaw.

seeAsaw was made by a collaborative team that included the artist, Ruben Correia & Andre Kong, Beam Center staff and Fellows, Beam Camp City youth staff. During summer 2023 campers at Beam Camp City participated in unique workshops inspired by seeAsaw. Also, our Career Connect program drew inspiration from seeAsaw and participants created their very own model playground.

This project would not have been possible without the work of Beam’s Fellows: Sophia Lawrence, Odin Robledillo, Ralphson Mothe, Aaron Aponte, Marcos Ayala, Angel Gomez, Antoni Arenas, and Eline Ortiz Duran and our Project Fabrication Instruction Lead, Stephen-Bernard Callender.
